About Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal is a noninvasive treatment that
uses a laser to reduce or remove unwanted body hair. The treatment is a good option for individuals with excess hair who would like to effectively reduce or remove hair from various areas of the body.

How it Works

During a laser hair removal treatment, concentrated light targets hair follicles, which are small cavities in the skin from which hair grows.
The laser is attracted to the hair’s melanin pigment and absorbed by the hair follicle. As a result, the hair is instantly vaporized.
Darker hair absorbs the laser more effectively because it has more melanin. This is why people with light skin and dark hair are ideal candidates for laser hair removal.
Laser hair removal for individuals with dark skin will require a special type of laser that is able to detect the hair against their skin.
Though laser hair removal can remove light hair, results are less likely to be drastic because the laser doesn’t focus well on nonpigmented hair.

What to Expect

Before the treatment, a medical specialist will cleanse the treatment area. Sensitive areas may be numbed with a topical gel. The client will then be given special protective eyewear to prevent eye damage from the laser.

The treatment will begin once the numbing gel has taken effect. The medical specialist will turn on the handheld device and send a beam of high-energy light to the treatment area. The bigger the treatment area, the longer the treatment will take. Small areas like the face or armpits can take as little as a couple of minutes, while larger areas such as the chest can take an hour or more. The laser may feel a sensation similar to a rubber band snapping or a sunburn-like sting.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How do I prepare for laser hair removal?
Before the treatment, the skin care specialist will provide the client with thorough preparation instructions. It’s important to follow these instructions to improve the effectiveness of the procedure and reduce the risk of side effects. Here are a few common recommendations we provide:

-Avoid exposure to sunlight for a few days before the procedure. Laser hair removal is not for individuals with tanned skin.
-Avoid irritating the skin.
-Don’t wax or pluck hairs.
-Avoid taking anti-inflammatory drugs that may increase bleeding, such as aspirin.

Laser hair removal cannot be done if the client has an active infection, such as a cold sore or bacterial skin infection. Additionally, individuals with dark skin may benefit from a skin-bleaching compound applied to the treatment area. This could increase the effectiveness of laser hair removal.
Are there side effects?
Severe complications from laser hair removal are rare. The most common side effects of the procedure are swelling, redness, discomfort, and skin irritation. These side effects typically subside within a few days after treatment.
